time to brush up on that high school spanish. les latino lovin' macondo is
ready to inject some flava into the gringos of new york. focusing on latino
comida de la calle (latin street food), macondo is the latin love child of chef
maximo tejada (of nearby rayuela) and restaurateur héctor sanz. named after the
fictional colombian village in gabriel garcía márquez's 1967 novel, one hundred
years of solitude, the place is overflowing with arepas, empanadas, churros and
piraguas. if those pose too challenging an ordering process for you, stick with
tacos modeled after tradish mexican street fare. a brazilian juice bar serves
up exotic fruit extracts, and brazil is also responsible for the hard stuff in
the form of pomegranate mojitos. concrete floors serve as the sidewalk through
a green room, set up to replicate a tropical rainforest. chef counters show\off
sparks flying in the kitchen, and theatrics (like hard cider poured as a
champagne fountain) can be properly appreciated. consider this the next big
mac-ondo.
