Urban gardens are not limited to roofs and outdoor spaces. In Manhattan's Lower East Side, restaurateur Héctor Sanz brings nature indoors. Macondo, a new tapas restaurant that evokes the feeling of an upscale street vendor, includes a back room with three types of ivies, including more than 40 Algerian ivies, tropical Pothos and other tropical plants, built by Marni Horwitz, a green roof and wall specialist with Alive Structures. Sanz believes the room adds to the restaurant's unpretentious natural aura. In La Rayuela, a two-story California olive tree grows through the center of Sanz's stunning restaurant, creating a romantic, fairy-tale ambiance.
